Quoted values, ovvero lo spazio tra le virgolette di una citazione. And Outer Spaces, gli spazi cosmici, o gli spazi esterni, esteriori. Altrove. La fraseologia del dizionario regala a volte fulminee e sorprendenti associazioni. I lavori presenti in mostra parlano, senza volerle definire, di queste due dimensioni con cui ci confrontiamo silenziosamente ogni giorno: l’infinito irriducibile, l’immensità dello spazio, il tempo incalcolabile e sovrumano; e il gesto quotidiano e contingente, l’azione inevitabile e costante della scelta e dello sguardo. Come in Light Year Ring, ad esempio. Altra fraseologia, altro objet trouvè da dizionario, dove la parola anno lega insieme tra loro la velocità difficilmente afferrabile di un anno luce, e il lento crescere concentrico dei cerchi di un albero. Nel lavoro di Alice Guareschi i contenuti e il soggetto sono spesso lasciati volutamente fuori campo. Restano le forme, la geometria, la durata, e il linguaggio. Così il tempo può essere immaginato, nel suo comporre figure e disegni, simile a un insieme contemporaneamente casuale e inesoralbile di forme fragili, come nel piccolo lavoro in ceramica dal titolo I Giorni e Le Ore. O pensato semplicemente, nel suo scorrere, come l’alternarsi di luce e di nuvole negli squarci di cielo sulla parete. Centrale la questione del punto di vista, dell’angolazione da cui si guardano le cose. Del pensiero che si sceglie di mettere di volta in volta nello spazio vuoto tra le virgolette. Del movimento che si decide di intraprendere nel mondo, paragonabile nella sua incertezza a quello di qualcuno che si sia inoltrato nella foresta, tra quelle che possono far pensare a rovine del passato ma forse non sono altro che spazi in attesa di portare alla luce, isolandole dalla confusione, riaffermandole, cose nuove. Come strumento di comunicazione con l’esterno, il linguaggio. Linguaggio che per sua stessa natura impone di arrendersi a una distanza tra sé e le cose, e di nuovo implica selezione e scelta, relatività del suono a seconda del contesto, e un sempre possibile (nonché interessante) fraintendimento.
Il titolo dell’oggetto in ceramica stampata posto accanto alla parete, in cui da un piccolo accendino da tasca (frammento di immagine rubata a Ed Ruscha, e dichiarato omaggio al grande artista americano) si sprigiona un’enorme fiamma, è la citazione di un amico che citava Heinrich Von Kleist: The Production of Thougth While Speaking. Nella convinzione che proprio per la natura cangiante della parola, per la sua plasticità piena di riverberi, è possibile a volte, mentre si parla, mentre si cerca di fare luce su sé stessi e sulle cose intorno, afferrare un pensiero, o raggiungere istantanei, quanto provvisori, momenti di consapevolezza.

The Alessandro de MArch gallery presents the second solo exhibition of Alice Guareschi.
Quoted values, in other words the space between quotation marks. And Outer Spaces: cosmic spaces, or external, exterior spaces. Elsewhere. Sometimes, dictionary phraseology presents us with sudden, surprising associations. The works in this exhibition describe, without wanting to define them, these two dimensions, which we silently contend with each day: implacable infinity, the vastness of space, incalculable, superhuman time; and the everyday, contingent gesture, the constant and inevitable action of choices and gazes. Like, for example, in Light Year Ring. More phraseology, another objet trouvé from the dictionary: the word year links both the elusive speed of a light year, and the slow concentric growth of the rings of a tree. In Alice Guareschi’s work, the content and the subject are often deliberately left out of the frame. What remains are shapes, geometry, duration, and language. Thus time can be imagined, as it composes figures and designs, similar to an accidental yet inexorable group of fragile forms; such as in the small ceramic composition entitled I Giorni e Le Ore (“Days and Hours”). Or time can be simply thought of, as it passes, as the alternation of light and clouds in scraps of sky on the wall. Central here is the question of viewpoint, the angle from which things are observed. The thoughts which time after time we choose to put into empty space, between quotation marks. The movement which one decides to make through the world. In its uncertainty this movement could be compared to that of someone venturing deep into the forest, among what could evoke ruins of the past, but which perhaps are none other than spaces waiting to bring to light new things, isolating them from confusion and reaffirming them. Like a tool for communicating with the outside, language. Language which, by its very nature, forces us to surrender to a distance between ourselves and things; and once again, which implies selection and choice, the relativity of sounds depending on their context, and an ever-present (not to mention interesting) possibility of misunderstanding. A printed ceramic object placed next to the wall features a small cigarette lighter (the fragment of an image stolen from Ed Ruscha, a deliberate homage to the great American artist) letting out an enormous flame. The title of this piece is the quote of a friend who in turn was quoting Heinrich Von Kleist: The Production of Thought While Speaking. In the belief that, precisely due to the changeable nature of words and their reverberation-filled plasticity, sometimes when speaking, when trying to shed light on ourselves and the things around us, we can grasp a thought, or reach instant, yet temporary, moments of awareness.
